Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 7, 2026
This policy explains how Compris! (the “Operator”) handles information in the Windows application “Compris!” (the “App”) and on its website.
1. The basics: your data stays on your PC
- Your recordings, transcripts, translations, notes, vocabulary, quizzes and settings are all stored on your own PC (
%APPDATA%\Compris). They are not sent to the Operator’s servers, and the Operator cannot see them. - The API keys you register are encrypted with a Windows feature (DPAPI) and stored on your PC.
2. What is sent to the AI services you choose
- When you use transcription, translation or AI features, audio or text is sent directly, using your own API keys, to the services you have chosen and registered (such as Deepgram, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, DeepL and Google Translate). It does not pass through the Operator.
- How those services handle your data is governed by their own privacy policies and terms.
3. Licenses and purchases
- Your name, email address and payment details at purchase are handled by Polar Software, Inc. (“Polar”), the Merchant of Record, and its payment processor (Stripe). The Operator can see purchasers’ email addresses and order history but does not receive card numbers or other payment details.
- When you activate a license key, and when the App periodically re-checks it (every 7 days), the App sends Polar the license key, your PC’s name (used as the activation label) and the app name. This is used only to manage the 3-PC limit and to check that the key is valid.
4. What the App downloads automatically
- At startup and once a day, the App downloads a notices/settings file and an AI price list from the Operator’s website (hosted on Cloudflare). No information identifying you is sent, although your IP address may appear in server logs as part of normal network communication.
- At startup and every 6 hours, the App checks for a new version where the installer is hosted (a public GitHub repository) and downloads it in the background if available. No information identifying you, and none of your recordings or notes, is sent (your IP address may appear in GitHub’s logs). The update is installed only when you click “Restart and update now”.
5. Bug reports
- If you use “Report a problem” in the App, the information you review on screen (your description, App version, PC environment, error log and, optionally, your email address) is sent to the Operator via Google Forms. You can check the content before sending, and nothing is sent unless you choose to send it.
- Error logs are otherwise kept only on your PC (
%APPDATA%\Compris\logs).
6. Website
- The website is hosted on Cloudflare. To display fonts and icons it loads Google Fonts and jsDelivr, which receive your IP address and similar information.
- The website does not use cookies for analytics or advertising.
7. How we use information
Information the Operator receives (purchasers’ email addresses, order history and bug reports) is used only to provide licenses, handle refunds and inquiries, fix bugs and send important notices. We do not sell or share it with third parties except where required by law.
8. Your rights
You may ask to access, correct or delete the information the Operator holds about you. If you live in the EU, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR): access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, objection, data portability, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Contact us at the address below. Data on your PC is removed when you delete the App or its data folder.
9. Changes
We will announce any changes to this policy on this page.
